Funding for research at the University of Bedfordshire is set to double following its successful performance in the Government’s Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce), which funds teaching and research in UK universities, has written to the University confirming that its grant would increase from just under half a million pounds to more than £1.1m as a result of its performance in the assessment.

Professor Andrew Slade, Pro Vice Chancellor Research and Enterprise at the University said: “This huge increase is a wonderful boost for our researchers whose excellent work has been recognised at Government level. Nationally, there has been a shift in funds between universities that will benefit Bedfordshire and similar institutions to continue their existing work and look at new projects over the coming years.”

New universities created after 1992 have seen the biggest increase in research funding with a massive 120 per cent rise nationally. The last RAE was carried out in 2001.

In the latest RAE, Bedfordshire was commended for it “world-leading” research in several areas including Communications, Cultural and Media Studies; Earth Systems and Environmental Science; Social Work, Social Policy and Administration; Sport, Tourism and Leisure; English Language and Literature. The University has also been recognised as “internationally excellent” in the areas of Computer Science and Informatics; and Business and Management Studies.

“Being given such a high rating reaffirms our reputation for excellence in a number of areas including Media, Social Policy and Sport,” added Professor Slade.

In addition to this increase, Bedfordshire has also seen a rise in income for externally competitive research which now totals more than £2.8m.
