The University of Bedfordshire has been given the opportunity of a licence to run its new community radio station by regulator Ofcom as from next year.
Radio LaB, will provide young adult and youth communities as well as Luton’s over 55s with a mix of music, comedy, chat, sports and special programmes. It will also offer listeners the chance to become broadcasters themselves.
In the meantime, the University’s temporary annual station, formerly known as Luton FM & LaB Radio, has just returned to the airways, serving the young people of Luton and surrounding areas for the next month. The station is totally run and operated the University's students and provides them with the opportunity to present and produce their own radio shows, under the supervision of a team of 3rd year radio students. The new management team includes Kurtis Maharajh, Pooja Kumar, Jack Cornell, Kerry Magorian, Rick Kitson, Amanda Ukaegbu and Tom Kerridge.
The temporary station is live on air from 9 am to 12 midnight, 7 days a week, and includes a special programme by and for international students between 7 pm & 9 pm weekdays.
Janey Gordon, Principal Lecturer at the University commented: “We are now in our 12th year thanks to various sponsorship from local companies and organisations, in particular Recycle For Luton . Radio LaB provides invaluable practical experience for the students whilst offering a light-hearted entertainment service for the local community. And the icing on the cake is being offered the licence for a full-time station starting next year.”
Radio LaB can be found on 87.9 FM and www.beds.ac.uk/radiolab
