Staff and students from University of Bedfordshire’s Faculty of Education & Sport, recently took part in the Flora London Marathon. Not only did the University participate in the run but it also provided runners with an essential sports therapy service.

Around 90 Sports Therapy Degree students offered recovery massage, on behalf of various charities, at the several locations around the finish line. This is the 8th year the University has collaborated with Sports Therapy UK to provide therapists for the London Marathon.

Entrants from the University included 2nd year Sports Therapy student Stuart Wilke, who completed the run with a personal best of 3 hrs 14 mins and Julia Lines, Sports

Development Officer, Sports & Recreation Dept, who finished in 4 hours 39 minutes.

Julia had a very personal reason for running in this year’s Marathon.  She ran in memory of her dad who died suddenly of a heart attack and raised in excess of £550 for the British Heart Foundation.

She commented: “I was well on the way to a personal best when about the 31K mark, I strained a muscle in my back and it went into spasm. The final 11K felt like an eternity but I shuffled along and finally got across the finish line.”

This is Julia’s third marathon having previously run both the Reykjavik and Prague marathons. She concluded: “I would like to say a big thank you to all who donated. The experience was amazing, particularly the support from the crowd. After receiving my finisher’s medal, I promptly burst into tears!”
