Sports teams at the University of Bedfordshire are celebrating after winning a record number of leagues this year. In total, eleven teams across the two campuses (Luton and Bedford) won their respective leagues.
It was a double celebration for the women’s football team in Bedford after they scooped a cup and league double. Other sports that excelled in Bedfordshire were cricket, football, hockey, basketball and rugby.
This has been the biggest ever haul for the University’s sports teams, following the decision to hand the administrative running of sports over to the Students’ Union (UBSU). UBSU has also introduced 8 new sports this academic year, including Korfball, Swimming, Table Tennis, Badminton, Kayaking, Cheerleading, Gaelic Football and Volleyball.
Ciaran O'Brien, Student Activities Coordinator, said: "UBSU is committed to developing sports at the University. Sport plays such an important part of University life for so many students, and the results we have had this year show that we are performing very well as a University. Introducing new sports not only provides students with a great way to meet new people and to stay in shape, but also enables us to represent the University at a national level.
“I am really looking forward to next year and feel with the teams we have, we can continue to have an impact on University sports across the country. All of the players can be really proud of what they have achieved this year.
Professor Les Ebdon CBE, Vice Chancellor University of Bedfordshire, said: "I was thrilled to hear of the successes of so many of our sports teams. To have done so well over such a range of sports in the first year of the new arrangements for running sports is a real encouragement. I want to say well done and congratulations to all involved. Everyone at the University of Bedfordshire is really proud of what you have achieved."
The University was placed 14th in the country for sports science related courses in the Guardian University Guide 2009. This follows an investment of more than £8m in sports equipment and facilities in the last three years.
