World-renowned hair and beauty experts gathered at the University of Bedfordshire to attend a pioneering course designed to develop scientific knowledge within the hair and beauty industry.
The University of Bedfordshire’s Responsible Person Introductory Course for Hair and Beauty Professionals, is the first course of its kind in the UK. Its aim is to increase knowledge and awareness on the effects of daily use of chemicals on both salon staff and their clients.
Created in conjunction with leading Trichologist Brian Plunkett of Trichocare Education Ltd, the first half-day course was attended by representatives from international beauty companies to local salon staff.
Lectures are geared towards practical application, ensuring professionals are able to apply their newly acquired knowledge within the workplace. They are delivered by some of the industry’s most respected scientists, including Dr John English (Consultant Dermatologist and Editor of the British Journal of Dermatology) and Toxicologist Dr David Basketter (Section Editor of Contact Dermatitis Journal and a past president of the European Society of Contact Dermatitis). The first session included three presentations covering dermatitis, hair and scalp science and the chemistry of hairdressing chemicals.
Rita Mascia, Business Development Manager at the University’s Knowledge Hub, said: “The event went extremely well and we have received some excellent feedback. Delegates attended for a variety of reasons, from wanting to increase their knowledge of chemicals and allergies to career advancement and business development opportunities. We welcomed participants from a broad range of sectors, from hair stylists to hairdressing lecturers and representatives of global beauty companies who travelled overseas to attend.
“The course has been very timely because of the amount of press coverage on the subject of hairdressing chemicals in recent months. The delegates who attended this first session are very much leading the way in kick-starting a change within the industry and showed great responsibility by wanting to gain more knowledge about the chemicals they work with.
“We are hoping to develop a fuller set of continuous professional development courses for hairdressers and plans are already in progress. It’s very exciting that the University and Trichocare Education Ltd are leading the way with this type of course development – something that is essential for the industry.”
