Some 40 students from ten schools from Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire will sample a fun-filled day of chemistry at the Salters' Festival of Chemistry at The University of Bedfordshire on Wednesday 20 May.

Each school will be represented by a team of four, 11-13 year olds. During the morning the teams will take part in a competitive, hands-on, practical activity, “Murder (?) at Saltmarsh Farm” in which they will use their analytical chemistry skills.

In the afternoon, they will compete in the “University Challenge”, a practical activity chosen by the University, in which they will be required to “Cool It” by using chemistry to lower the temperature. This will be followed by a fun lecture, by Dr Peter Sutton of Lealands High School, Luton involving some chemical magic and snakes!

The day will end with a Prize giving at which all participants will be given individual fun prizes and participation certificates. The winning teams will be awarded prizes for their schools.

Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry, Dr Thompsett, said: “The Salters' Festival of Chemistry is a fun day for everyone concerned. It's really great to see young people doing science in a laboratory and enjoying themselves."

The Salters' Festivals of Chemistry are an initiative of The Salters' Institute, whose aim is to promote the appreciation of chemistry and related sciences among the young. The Festival at the university is one of a series of 55 which are taking place at universities throughout the UK and the Republic of Ireland between March and June 2009.

The event is being run in partnership with the Royal Society of Chemistry.
