Talented high school students from Luton were recognised last night by University of Bedfordshire’s Vice Chancellor Emeritus, Dr Tony Wood, at The Ludlow Awards for English.
The Awards are aimed at Year 11 students from schools and academies in Luton for whom English is a second or additional language. Sponsored by local businessman and Chairman of the University’s Development Board, Derek Ludlow, the Awards are also endorsed by The English-Speaking Union, an international charity that promotes understanding and friendship through the use of the English language.
The two main categories of award are: For outstanding achievement in the writing of clear and accurate English and For making rapid progress, demonstrating determination and ability. Winners were each presented with a cash prize and Certificate of Achievement. The winners were:-

University of Bedfordshire’s Dr Wood is also Chairman of the Ouse Valley Branch of The English-Speaking Union. He said: “This is the first time the English-Speaking Union has organised such an event for young people whose first language is not English. I am delighted with the response and success of the event.”
Derek when addressing the students said: “The English Language is crucial. Use this success as a springboard for your future - what you have achieved is very important.” He also added: “I hope this will become an annual event to spread peace, success and fun for everyone.”
Roger Cornwell, Deputy Chairman of the Ouse Valley Branch of the English-Speaking Union added: “Congratulations to all the winners and to those who didn’t win too. Thank you to the members of the various English Departments from all the schools and academies - you are also very important.”
