Unexpected success at the Scottish Championships was music to the ears for the University of Bedfordshire’s Pipe Band.
The pipe band, which is based at the Luton campus, were runners-up in their grade (two) at the championships in Dumbarton. There are four grades in total.
The team comprised band leader Anthony Doherty, who is a fireman, and six other members of his family as well as a dozen others.
Doherty said: “It was a complete shock and we’d have been happy to have just finished in the top six. It’s a great achievement and it shows what hard work can do.”

It was the first time in 27 years that an English band had finished so highly at the championships and also the first time in 12 years that a band from England has broken into the top six at any of the five majors in grade two.
The band’s next assignment is the British Championships in Banbridge, Northern Ireland, on 27 June.
