A £1.1m grant has been awarded to the University of Bedfordshire to set up a major centre for social work research.

It is one of the largest research grants to be given in the field and was awarded by the Social Care Trust, which is administered by the Charities Aid Foundation, through a bequest from social work research pioneer Tilda Goldberg.

Tilda Goldberg died in 2004 and left the funds to be used to support studies and activities concerned with the effectiveness of social care. The Centre will be named the Tilda Goldberg Centre for Social Work and Social Care

The University’s success in obtaining the grant through an open competition reflects the ongoing investment in social work research at Bedfordshire and the University’s special interest in building evidence for effective practice in social work and social care in general and in the field of substance misuse in particular.

The Tilda Goldberg Centre for Social Work and Social Care will carry out research and evaluation across the whole of social care. The initial focus is on identifying what interventions work when people misuse drugs and alcohol, with substance misuse being studied across a range of social work and social care settings, including work with children and families, older people and individuals experiencing mental illness.

The Centre will promote the development of evidence about what works in social work and social care and the use of evidence-based approaches in practice, through training and fellowships. The overall objective of the Centre is to improve social work practice and therefore to improve the quality of life of many vulnerable people.

Centre Director Dr Donald Forrester (pictured above), said: “We are delighted the University of Bedfordshire has been chosen for this grant which will allow us to develop an exciting and important field of research and practice development.

"Over the next five years we aim for the centre to be internationally renowned for evidence-based practice. We hope that the new centre will contribute to a significant increase in the volume and quality of research evaluating social work and social care interventions, and that this in turn will have a visible effect in improving practice.

“We are also very pleased to have Tilda Goldberg’s name associated with the university. Tilda was one of the most important social work researchers of the 20th Century and the aim of the centre is to continue and develop the type of rigorous research that she carried out. It will also contribute to developing social work research nationally through a programme of events and scholarships.”
