University of Bedfordshire students have been getting a taste of what it's like to own their very own BAFTA.

Over the past six weeks, Course Leader in Television Production & Senior Lecturer in Media Performance, Kathryn Wolfe, has been organising a series of industry-focused workshops to give students a feel for the real world of Media.

Kathryn said: "The workshops have been designed to help BA (Hons) students in Media Performance and Television Production, hone their craft and become multi-skilled."

The workshops have been presented by some of the most respected practitioners in the industry including: Steve Haynes, Post Production Sound expert and former Head of Post Production Sound at Yorkshire; Judy Oliver, who runs local-news.tv, a community website for the Bedfordshire area; Barbara Emile, BAFTA winning BBC Producer of 'Holby City' and 'EastEnders'; Del Brown, Freelance Director/Vision Mixer; Jackie Andrews, Producer Teachers' TV and Paul Barham, Lighting Director who has worked on MTV.

Kathryn said: "It's a common misnomer that jobs in Media are a walk in the park. It's really important that students learn early on that it takes a lot of hard work if you want to be taken seriously."

Recently, Producer Barbara Emile, 'loaned' her BAFTA to students studying TV Production, Creative Writing, Media Performance and Journalism. Barbara spoke about the production process on long running series (soaps). She explained what makes a good script, how storylines are created and the roles of Script Editor and Producer.

Another expert to visit the University, Del Brown, took the students through their paces in the University's state-of-the-art TV Studio & Gallery. Del who has worked on Sky Sports, News 24 and QVC, the shopping channel, demonstrated his wealth of experience, offering students advice, encouragement and positive feedback. Del's role, as a Freelance Director/Vision Mixer, is to manage what is ultimately seen on our screen; providing direction to cameras and presenters.

Del was full of praise for the students including Carl Akkouh - currently studying Level 1 TV Production - after he tried filling Del's shoes directing fellow students presenting in the studio.

Carl said: "It's much harder than it looks. It's brilliant to get someone of Del's standing to come in and show us how it's done. I'm aiming to set up my own production company and the grounding I'm getting here at the Uni is providing me with invaluable real-life experience and confidence to go for it."

Kathryn added: "We're really grateful that so many industry specialists have been kind enough to give their time. They have given a true flavour of what life is like in the profession and really inspired the students."

The next workshop is on Tues 2 June when the University welcomes Rob Lambie, Producer/Director on mainstream TV observational documentaries such as Airline, Wife Swap and Come Dine with Me.
