Alistair Burt MP at the Luton campus

The deputy chairman of the Conservative Party visited the University of Bedfordshire to talk about one of his great passions away from politics – football.

Alistair Burt, who is also the MP for North East Bedfordshire, was at the University’s Luton campus on Friday afternoon.

He gave a presentation to sport management/football studies students about a football project in Rwanda he has been involved in.

The project aims to provide equipment to youngsters in the country and improve the standard of coaching.

Mr Burt, who first became an MP in 1983, discussed his two trips to the African country including one earlier in the year.

He is planning to make a further trip to Rwanda in 2010 and the University is also hoping to get involved in the project in the future.

Simon Robinson, Academic Director of Undergraduate Tourism, Leisure and Sport Management, said: “It shows how football is not just about the Premiership and how it can be used as a developmental tool. The students were really impressed and it’s a practical example of the theories we teach.”
