A chance meeting with the University of Bedfordshire’s Vice Chancellor in a Hungarian restaurant led Leonardo Sanchez Gorosito all the way from his home in Argentina to this region.
The 31 year old from Buenos Aires enrolled on a part-time PGCE in Oxford (Bedfordshire –OCVC) following his initial encounter with Professor Les Ebdon CBE.
Leonardo recently attended the graduation ceremony in Bedford with his family and retold the story of the curious and unusual way in which the University came into his life.
While on holiday to Budapest in 2006, Leonardo and friends went to a local restaurant.
Unsure of what to order from the unfamiliar menu, he sought advice from the next table. Professor Ebdon, in Hungary on an educational visit, suggested the goulash and the two struck up a conversation. Always with an eye for a potential student, the Vice Chancellor gave Leonardo his business card.
By now Leonardo was working in Oxford as a teacher of A-level Spanish. And as he looked to develop his teaching career, he began researching for local PGCE courses and instantly recognising the University’s logo, he found the Vice Chancellor’s card and contacted the University.
Now, two years on, he has graduated with a PGCE in Post Compulsory Education at Oxford and Cherwell Valley College.
Still living in Oxford, but working at the University of Oxford, he teaches Spanish in the Department of Continuing Education.
A delighted Leonardo introduced his family to the Vice Chancellor and said: “The course has made a great difference to me. Although it is very demanding to work and study, the possibility to do it part time was a major attraction and I found the course very enjoyable.
“The tutors at Bedfordshire –OCVC were extremely helpful. The support from the University was excellent and I found the online resources very useful.”
