The tracksuit, the cigar, the cheeky grin – there was no mistaking the presence of Sir Jimmy Savile OBE at the University of Bedfordshire today (Friday).
Even aged 83, the colourful former radio and television presenter was still able to entertain the crowds at the Luton campus.
Sir Jimmy was in Luton to receive an Honorary Doctor of Arts for his lifelong support of the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Aylesbury.
The star of ‘Jim’ll Fix It’, who was also the first and last ever presenter of ‘Top of the Pops’, has raised £20 million for the hospital and has run hundreds of marathons for various charitable organisations.

Sir Jimmy said: “I was shocked when I had
the letter saying I’d got an honorary degree and I’m thrilled to be receiving
this.
"I didn’t go to a very good school myself and I know a university education is an amazing thing.”
Also receiving honorary awards were former University of Bedfordshire Chancellor Sir Robin Biggam and Vice-Chair of the University Board of Governors Helen Nellis.
Hundreds of students were also graduating yesterday (Thursday) and today in the ceremonies at St Mary’s Church.
Students receiving their awards were mainly from the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, although all four of the University’s faculties were represented at the ceremonies.
