Eighteen months into the job and Professor Ashraf Jawaid is clearly making a good impression.
The University of Bedfordshire’s Deputy Vice Chancellor (External Relations), who joined in April 2008, has already received recognition of his hard work from Luton Borough Council.
Professor Jawaid went to the Town Hall recently to receive an award for his ‘outstanding service to the community of Luton’.
He said: “I’ve tried to create a good relationship with the borough council since I arrived. Also, there has been a real increase in the number of international students and they contribute significantly to the local community.
“To sell Luton overseas, I need to have the tools to do this with things like hotels, cinemas and certain types of shops.”
Professor Jawaid’s work is ongoing, including promoting closer links with the other major employers in the town like London Luton Airport.
He said: “We’re trying to raise the profile of the University in the town and in the local area. The University is a very big employer in Luton and makes a vital contribution to the area.”
The Mayor of Luton, Cllr Mohammed Riaz, presented Professor Jawaid with his award and said: “It was a privilege to present Professor Jawaid with a certificate in recognition of his sterling work supporting overseas students.”
