The University of Bedfordshire received glowing recommendations when a Government minister spoke to some of its students.
Lord Young of Norwood Green visited the Bedford campus on Friday morning for an informal chat with students. Afterwards, he also spoke with senior members of staff from the University.
The Minister for Students said: “I thought it went very well indeed; if I was the VC (Vice Chancellor), I would be pleased with the responses. There were very few negative comments and, by and large, they were very happy bunnies!
“There was a good mix of students, from a reasonable cross-section of courses, including a couple of first years. A lot of them were the first in their family to go to university – young people see it as aspirational to get a university education which is great.
“The quality of teaching as well as the pastoral care seems to be excellent here. Employability is a big issue nowadays and they were all very pleased with the help and guidance they were receiving on things like CVs and interview techniques.”
Lord Young is carrying out a series of student listening visits on behalf of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. They are designed to hear first hand from students about their experiences at university and the information will then be used to inform national policy development.
Students also found the meeting useful and one, a first year studying Sport and PE, said: “The session was really useful as we could voice our opinions freely and it’s good to know we can do this and they want to know.”
Another, an Advertising and Marketing student in her final year at the Luton campus, said: “Feedback generally was very positive and I felt we were being listened to. I found it beneficial to know what the Bedford students thought.”
The University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon CBE, said: “I am delighted that Lord Young had such a positive visit and that our students had the chance to get across their views of the University.
“Employability is a core value of this University and so I was pleased that the Minister for Students received such a positive response from students on this issue.”
