Freshers' Week

The first few days in a new place are always full of nervous anticipation – and students starting at the University of Bedfordshire were feeling no different.

New students, as well as returning ones, have been welcomed to Luton and Bedford for the start of the 2009-2010 academic year with Freshers’ Week.

Students have been finding their feet in the lively University environment, and lots of events were organised by the Students’ Union to help them settle in and meet new people.

The annual Freshers’ Fayres allowed the new students to take a break for a few hours, have some fun, relax and meet new people in what were the biggest and best fayres ever seen at the University.

With more than 5000 students visiting the giant marquees in Bedford and Luton, students had the chance to find out all about the Students’ Union, the University, the local community as well as meeting several national companies.

Another big attraction at the Freshers’ Fayres was the many stalls which offered everything from guidance and joining University societies and sports teams to student freebies and discounts.

The fayres, as well as several events held throughout Freshers’ Week, allowed students to socialise, helping them to meet new people from other courses and nationalities and make new friends.

Jodie Lockwood, Vice President Communications in the Students’ Union, said: “The Freshers’ Fayres were some of the busiest I have ever seen.

“We had new and returning students queuing down the street to come inside. The sports and societies stands were busy all day and the Students’ Union signed up hundreds of new players to teams and members to societies.

“It was great to welcome so many students and I was able to meet and greet thousands of people during the fayres. It was a brilliant event that had something for everyone and it was fantastic to see so many different nationalities and cultures sharing interests.

“We try and arrange an array of activities during Freshers’ Week designed to help students meet new people and friends. The fayres are the busiest events of the week and should help ease students into their courses and, for many, their new lives at their new homes.”
