Revd Cass Howes at her Welcome Celebration

The first ever full-time chaplain at Bedford has been officially welcomed to the University of Bedfordshire.

Revd Cassandra Howes, known as Cass, outlined her vision for the chaplaincy on the Bedford campus this week.

Prominent University staff, including Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE, were joined by students and members of local faith communities at Monday lunchtime’s Welcome Celebration in the University Theatre.

As well as addresses from the Revd Howes and the Vice Chancellor, there were also Sikh musicians, a prayer/blessing dance from former student Ashwini Arcot who now works at the University, and representatives from the University and the local community offering their own individual welcome.

Revd Howes said: “There were quite a lot of people from the local community and it was good to bring them into the University.

“Hopefully the chaplaincy here could be a catalyst for a link between the town and the University.

“My message is that you don’t have to be religious or to have a problem to get involved with the chaplaincy. I’m trying to figure out the best way for the chaplaincy to work within a very sports-orientated campus.”

Revd Howes, who started at the end of June, also aims to promote strong links with the chaplaincy at Luton. The Luton chaplain, Revd Andrew Goodman, attended Monday’s Welcome Celebration and the two chaplains emphasised their commitment to working together.
