Heroic University of Bedfordshire student, Samantha Whale, has made the news after pulling a struggling swimmer to safety from a Luton pool.
The Computer Games Development student has received a commendation from the local ambulance service for her efforts in saving Megan, a fellow Luton Penguins Club swimming teaching assistant, from drowning.
The modest Samantha said: “I don’t feel like a hero. I just did what anybody else would have done in the same situation.”
The incident, which took place in the swimming pool at Lealands High School, was the first time Samantha had put the lifeguarding skills she had learned when she was 17 into practice.
Samantha, 23, said: “Someone had noticed that Megan was feeling a little unwell and I noticed that her swimming was lackadaisical and that’s unusual for her.
“Then her head went under and I went to see if she was alright, but she was out of it, so I pulled her over to the side of the pool.”
Once at the side of the pool she sought the help of an on-duty lifeguard to help Megan out of the pool and into the changing rooms to recover while an ambulance was called.
Samantha added: “When the paramedics arrived and her blood pressure was really high it registered just how serious it could have been.”
Geri Arthur, acting general manager of the Beds and Herts Ambulance Service, said: “It’s good for the community to recognise when members of the public have helped us out.
“Many people would be scared to do anything in that sort of situation in case they do something wrong, and what Samantha did was above and beyond the call of duty.”
Samantha also made the news in 2008 when she set the world record with a gaming partner for the highest campaign score for a two-player cooperative in five minutes on Halo 3.
