Past UBSU presidents collect the award from NUS President Wes Streeting

Staff and officers from the University of Bedfordshire Students’ Union (UBSU) are celebrating after scooping a bronze Students’ Union Evaluation Initiative (SUEi) Award at the House of Commons.

Last week, UBSU staff and executive officers were joined by senior University staff to pick up the Government backed SUEi Award for the Students’ Union’s continued commitment to improving the service it provides to students.

UBSU has been audited over the last two years by the SUEi team. Results showed that UBSU has been improving since the audit began and that its communication with students is excellent.

The award was collected by Lilly-Ann who led on the project, Julie Sadlier (UBSU President), Martin Davey (UBSU General Manager) and Jay Chinnasamy (Vice President Union and Community Development). It was presented by NUS President Wes Streeting and North East Derbyshire MP Natacha Engel at a special reception in London.

After collecting the award, Jay Chinnasamy, said: “This was a great achievement for the Students’ Union and shows our continued commitment to improving the experience of students at the University of Bedfordshire. We will be working hard over the coming years and we will be aiming to be the first ‘small’ Students’ Union in the country to receive a silver award.”

In the final report, the auditors said: "There is no doubt that the Union’s values are displayed in the actions of its staff in that they genuinely strive to satisfy their members. The Union has a strong environmental policy and that the level of satisfaction with the Union’s services and activities by members has increased over the past two years."

Since the audit, the Students’ Union executive has increased the amount of time spent communicating to students, introduced more robust key performance indicators for staff and placed further emphasis on increasing the number of candidates standing in SU elections.
