After more than 30 years working in financial services Diane Baldwin found herself a victim of the recession.

Now, thanks to a £5,000 bursary, she is embarking on a year-long Masters of Business Administration (MBA) programme at the University of Bedfordshire Business School.

Diane, from Milton Keynes, has enjoyed working for a number of financial institutions, but during the past decade she was employed by one major retail bank in a variety of senior roles.

Changes introduced meant her role within the Regulatory and Risk team became redundant. An internal transfer to another role was prevented by the economic climate.

The University of Bedfordshire Business School MBA is a rigorous and intellectually-demanding masters level programme, which offers a wide-ranging exploration of business theories and strategies, that link back to real-life business problems and current issues.

Diane said: "One of the lessons learnt from the current recession is likely to be that many business leaders have needed to 'fine-tune' their existing skills such as decision making, operational control, communication, innovation and change management.

"As the UK recovers from recession, if businesses want to be well placed to take advantage they will need to focus on new ways of doing business and improving efficiency.

“Most will benefit from new ideas and skills, gained either by recruiting new managers or employing 'experienced interim managers' to guide them.

"By studying for an MBA I hope to consolidate my experience gained in a variety of economic climates, develop new skills and gain confidence to help me demonstrate sound, all-round business and functional management expertise.

“I’d like to be able to work with a variety of locally- based firms and help mentor local people."

The Business School’s MBA Programme Director Tim Priestman, said: "Diane was an outstanding applicant and we look forward to her joining the programme.

“The fact that she is going to use the diverse skills that she will learn on her MBA to help local businesses is fantastic, and we will give her the tools she needs to succeed."

The University of Bedfordshire is one of four Higher Education Institutions delivering validated courses through the University Centre Milton Keynes (UCMK).

A part time version of the MBA programme - the Executive MBA - is being launched at the UCMK at an open evening on Tuesday, 15 September between 5.30pm and 8pm at the UCMK campus on Silbury Boulevard.

The University of Bedfordshire is offering a number of £5,000 bursaries to outstanding MBA candidates from Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire who want to study the MBA programme full-time.
