Severe illness prevented Nicola Lee fulfilling her dream of completing a degree at university. But after being chosen to receive a £10,950 bursary to fund a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) at the University of Bedfordshire, she is ready to take her first steps towards a new life.

The University’s Business School offered the full bursary to someone who could demonstrate commitment to taking charge of their career and to building strategic skills for business in an exclusive competition for readers of The Luton News, Dunstable Gazette and Herald and Post.

The judges felt Nicola, 34, had a passion and drive to succeed on the challenging MBA programme due a clear focus on her goals and triumph over past adversity.

Nicola said: “I went to university to study accountancy but when I was in my first year I suffered kidney failure due to an allergic reaction. This forced me to drop out and is something I have always regretted.

“However two years ago, I received a kidney transplant and my energy levels have gone through the roof.

“When I read about this competition I knew I had to fill in the application and grasp the opportunity to fulfil my ambition.

“I have always felt education is the key to the longevity of a successful business and The University of Bedfordshire MBA programme offers a great insight into theories and strategies that will prove invaluable as I move into my new career.”

Nicola, who lives in Luton with her husband and currently works as a Commercial Executive for a communications company, will start the year-long MBA programme in January. She plans to open her own business on completion of the programme.

Tim Priestman, MBA Programme Director at the University’s Business School, said: “We had a phenomenal response to the competition and look forward to welcoming Nicola in the New Year. Completing the MBA programme will put her ahead of the pack as she will understand theories and strategies that link back to real-life business problems and current issues.”
