MP to visit University on World Mental Health Day

Luton North MP Kelvin Hopkins will be among the speakers visiting the University of Bedfordshire as part of World Mental Health Day.

Mental health problems affect as many as one in four people at some point in their lives. Sufferers can face discrimination which may stop them from seeking help. It can also affect them applying for jobs and doing the everyday tasks others take for granted.

Jill Gale, University Mental Health Advisor, said: “There is a stigma attached to mental health. This forum is about trying to break down some of the social stereotypes and educate people on the issues.”

First celebrated in 1992, World Mental Health Day aims to raise awareness of mental health issues and make them a global priority. The event at the University is one of several events taking place across Bedfordshire next month.

Attendees will be able to submit questions to the panel of four, which includes the local MP and mental health experts. It will be chaired by University Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE.

The event is open to staff, students and the general public and takes place on Thursday, 15 October from 7.30pm in the Ian Dixon Lecture Theatre at Park Square, Luton.
