Luton Film Festival 2010 preview

Final year students at the University of Bedfordshire are organising a Luton Film Festival as their special project.

The festival is running from 29 April-3 May to coincide with the Luton Arts Festival, now in its third year.

The six students are from Marketing and Media Practices – Jolita Kilinskaite from Lithuania and Latvian Jevgenija Lepneka – and a quartet from Media Production of another Lithuanian, Gintare Civilkaite, as well as Seema Nabavi, Shelina Jeffers and Craigh Lewis.

They decided to organise the film festival because as spokesperson Jolita said: “It is very useful and appreciated if you have some real experience for when you graduate. The festival is going to be full of great directors and their films combined with the work of students.”

The opening ceremony on Thursday, 29 April, is going to take place in the Judith Blake Theatre in Park Square of the Luton campus. The evening will be full of exciting short films and animations from first and second year students.

The following day – Friday, 30 April - will see the third year students’ degree show and is a good opportunity to see what they have learned through all three years and how they express themselves creatively.

Great feature length films from various parts of the world are being shown on Saturday, 1 May, including the Lithuanian film Journey through Lithuania.

This film has already attracted the attention of the Lithuanian embassy in London and its ambassador is delighted that students are helping its promotion.

Then on Sunday, 2 May, the Luton Film Festival will be moving to the Sub Club in the Students’ Union and will offer various short films from local directors and colleges as well as MA students.

The final day (Monday, 3 May) of the festival will see the best directors and best movies awarded with prizes. The awards ceremony is taking place in The Park pub in Luton which is near Park Square.
