SeedBeds opening

The Bishop of Bedford led ecumenical prayers to mark the opening of the SeedBeds spirituality and faith centre on the Bedford campus.

The Rt Revd Richard Inwood was joined by representatives of different faith communities and Christian denominations from the area to celebrate the launch of the centre which is designed as a spiritual meeting place and community space.

After short welcomes from the Bishop and the Vice Chancellor Les Ebdon CBE, who recognised the part spirituality and faith plays in the lives of some students and staff at the University, there was a ribbon cutting ceremony. It was followed by group ‘reflection’ sessions during which participants were asked to identify how ties between the University and faith communities could be improved.

Bedford chaplain Cass Howes said the event was a powerful demonstration of the role the University is capable of playing in the local community and in reaching out to people of all faiths and no-faith As well as people from the Baha’I, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Muslim and Sikh faiths, the event was attended by an atheist, and a humanist.

“We would like to build on the engagement from today’s event to understand how groups could use these facilities more widely,” explained Cass. “The purpose of the day was to explore ways in which the University can develop relationships with the community, work with vulnerable people, the elderly and the young, and improve access to higher education.

“I was very pleased with the diversity of the people that attended and everyone appeared to leave enthused and feeling positive.”
