Luton Arts Festival - all systems go

Final plans are in place for Luton Arts Festival which hits the town over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The event from Thursday, 29 April to Monday, 3 May features a plethora of arts-based events including live music, theatre, dance, poetry, a BMX competition, a comedy stage and art exhibitions.

All events are free and take place in the town centre on two stages situated at St George’s Square and Market Hill. There will also be a dance tent in Park Square opposite Yates’s.

Luton Arts Festival is sponsored by the University of Bedfordshire and is formerly B: Fest.

The programme includes:

Thursday, 29 April

St George’s Square Stage: Room of Requirement (children’s workshops), Unseen Shadows Hip Hop Showcase, Slam Poetry.

Market Hill Stage: Live Life Drawing Class, Fibs and Fables adult storytelling event.

Friday, 30 April

St George’s Square: F-F-F-F Fashion! show featuring new ranges from Henry Holland, Principles and Ben De Lisi plus 12 new up- and- coming Luton/London based designers. Anglo Indian Folk Fusion act The James Asher Group.

Market Hill: A Day of Dance including It’s Bigger than a Hip Hop Workshop, Is it Tea Time Governor? tea Dance and Knitty Gritty knitting demonstration. Nobody Puts Luton in the Corner event featuring Mughouse Rhythm and Blues Band, Rock and Roll dancers.

Park Square: Film Screening of Nosferatu with live electronic soundtrack.

Saturday, 1 May

St George’s Square: Mayday Luton featuring a line- up of 12 up and coming indie/rock outfits including Daniel Peterson, The Lipstick Melodies and Exit Avenue.

Market Hill: Odessey Flatland BMX Competition, DJ’s and MCs from Luton Sound Forum.

Park Square: House and Minimal DJ’s.

Sunday, 2 May

St Georges Square: Love Music Hate Racism Day.

Market Hill: The Ouse Valleys Singles Club, Bedfordshire New Comedian of the Year Finals, Jelly Moose Live Lounge.

Park Square: Drum and Bass and Dubstep DJ’s.

Monday, 3 May

St George’s Square: A Day of Jazz, Blues and Reggae featuring Fresh, New Groove Formation and Luton Youth Jazz Orchestra followed by The Festival Ceilidh with Moondance Ceilidh band.

Market Hill: A Day of Rock and Rockabilly bands including, Betaboy, The Voltron and The Roofraisers.

Park Square: Trance and Electro DJ’s.

Festival Director Jess Mason-Wilkes said: “All events take place from 12noon to 10pm over the five days. With great food and drink on offer and with a weekend where temperatures are set to be high we can’t see any reason for you not to be out enjoying the sunshine and the entertainment. See you all there.”
