Sporty students from the University of Bedfordshire have nearly completed another exciting season in BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) competition.

Teams run by the Students’ Union (UBSU) have already won seven League titles and one Conference Cup title this academic year, with four teams still competing in their leagues.

Ciaran O’Brien, the UBSU student activities manager, said: “After so many league wins last season, the level of competition that our teams faced this year was much tougher, but we competed well and our teams have once again been very successful.

“This is testament to the hard work and commitment that many of our students have put in, and is a result of the way in which the University and UBSU works alongside each other to provide sport here.”

Between the two main campuses in Luton and Bedford, there was league success for Badminton Women’s 1st (Bedford), Basketball Women’s 1st (Bedford), Basketball Men’s 1st (Luton), Football Men’s 1st (Bedford), Football Men’s 2nd (Bedford), Hockey Women’s 1st (Bedford) and Netball 1st (Luton).

The University also reached the final stages of the Conference Cup in a number of sports, with Basketball Women’s 1st (Bedford) winning their final.

There are also four cricket teams in league and cup competition and they are expected to perform well this summer.

Ciaran said: “We have had a number of successes in other sport competitions this year too, with athletics, swimming and dodgeball teams doing well in particular.

“The quality of sport at the University is increasing every year and this is having a clear impact on the growth and success of our teams.”
