Three adventurers from the University are aiming to cycle 200 miles to raise funds for their trip to Africa.
Students Luke Taylor, Rikki Howard and Ashley Yeomans are cycling from Bedford to Southend and back over two days.
It is all to raise money for the final year trainee PE teachers to visit Malawi after Easter.
The trip will see the University working in partnership with non-profit organisation Inspire Malawi with the aim to continue to aid teacher development in physical education in that country.
Inspire Malawi was established by PE graduate Michelle Rowe in summer 2009 to promote and assist with the development work.
Joining co-ordinator Michelle and the three cyclists for the African adventure from 10-18 April are students Natasha Hale and Liz Myers along with lecturers Mark Bowler and Paul Sammon.
Michelle, who spent a gap year in Malawi working as a teacher, said: “It was life changing and when I returned, I started to raise money to help teachers and schools out there.
“I began by helping to redecorate some of the schools and classrooms. That went really well and made a real difference to the quality of teaching and education in Malawi.”
One of the cyclists, 22-year-old Luke, said: “We’re all really excited; it’s a really good way to help and make a difference, as well as putting theory into practice.”
Other fundraising efforts include staff and students posing for a risqué charity calendar before Christmas which was then sold on campus.
