Marathon runners have been put through their paces in the sports science laboratories at the University of Bedfordshire.
The six runners, of mixed ability, are competing in the 2010 Virgin London Marathon as Team New Balance. They are being supported by Running Fitness Magazine.
University staff conducted laboratory assessments to collect scientific data such as measuring the runners’ aerobic capacity, maximum heart rate, maximum oxygen uptake and body fat level.
The University’s Professor of Sport, Professor John Brewer, has run the last eight London Marathons himself, a dozen in total, although he is sitting out this year’s event on Sunday, 25 April.
Professor Brewer, who helped conduct the research, said: “The day was designed to advise the runners on their training regimen and their potential to compete in the Virgin London Marathon, setting realistic target times for the race.”
