The University of Bedfordshire is mourning the loss of two of its honoraries this week – while another one is attracting national attention.

Bedford’s favourite swim teacher Helen Elkington and jazz legend Sir Johnny Dankworth have passed away within days of each other. Both Helen and Sir Johnny were awarded their honorary degrees in 2006.

Despite officially retiring from her position as principal lecturer in 2004, 70-year-old Helen continued to monitor all the swimming sessions undertaken by the University right up until Christmas 2009. Click here for the full story.

Saxophonist Sir Johnny served as the musical director to the likes of Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald. As well as numerous film scores, he composed infamous television theme tunes for Tomorrow’s World and The Avengers, winning an Ivor Novello award for the latter.

News of his death was announced by his wife, singer Dame Cleo Laine, at a concert in the grounds of their home in Wavendon, Buckinghamshire, on Saturday night.

And fresh from his appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show on Friday night, King of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan’s latest film is hitting mainstream cinema this week.

Shah Rukh was presented with an honorary doctorate in Arts and Culture in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the arts, culture and media back in July.

He is the star of My Name Is Khan which is going on general release this Friday (12 February).
