Iraqi student May Witwit is quickly becoming a media star as she promotes her new book, Talking About Jane Austen in Baghdad, which was released this week.
Having already appeared on the BBC World Service on Christmas Day, May this week has appeared on Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour and is due to appear on GMTV next week. She has also been featured in The Sunday Telegraph, The Sunday Times and Grazia magazine.
The book tells the story of the unexpected email friendship of May and the BBC’s Bee Rowlatt.
It all started with an email from Bee trying to find an English speaking Iraqi to speak about the war. They hit it off straight away and would regularly compare their lives in London and Baghdad and shared their varied troubles.
The email conversation eventually turned to Bee helping May escape the horrors of Baghdad. Bee, with the help of the Council for Assisting Refugee Academics (CARA), succeeded and they had an emotional first meeting at Heathrow Airport in 2008.
Their emails give an insight into the daily struggles Iraqis faced and tell the story of how May finally was able to come over to the UK.
