Sixteen of the elite sporting students at the University are receiving cash to help continue their development.
The students are each receiving £1,050 a year to support their sports commitments during their studies as part of the University’s Sport Scholarship Scheme.
All competing at national and international level, the students are drawn from a variety of different sports from football to fencing, and rounders to rugby. As well as those competing for England and Great Britain, students are also representing the likes of Canada, Trinidad, Guernsey and even Lithuania.
Julia Lines, the University’s sports development officer, said: “Hopefully some of our talented athletes could be competing in the 2012 Olympics and that’s a goal for everybody to be aiming for.
“We’re developing a programme of sports science support for them all at the moment.”
