Around £16,000 was raised at the glamorous launch event for the Inspire Malawi project which is being backed by the University of Bedfordshire.
The University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon CBE, was among more than 150 invited guests on Thursday night at the Design Council in Covent Garden, London.
Inspire Malawi is the brainchild of PE graduate Michelle Rowe who set up the non-profit organisation last summer to support, promote and enhance primary and second education in central Malawi.
Michelle, who has been involved with Malawi since taking her gap year there in 2003, said after the launch event: “The evening was fantastic and an enormous success; there was a great turnout and we obviously raised a huge amount of money. In fact, money is still coming in and it may end up being even more than £16,000.”

Seventies icon Felicity Kendal, star of The Good Life, attended to show her support for the work in Malawi, while another television celebrity, Tania Bryer, gave the official welcome.
His Excellency Dr Francis Moto, High Commissioner to the Republic of Malawi, also gave an inspirational address.
Running entirely on money generated through fundraising activities and sponsorship, Inspire Malawi is continuing to work closely with the University to deliver teacher training and development courses.

Michelle is co-ordinating another visit to Malawi after Easter (10-18 April) involving two lecturers and five students from the University. The aim is to continue to aid teacher development in physical education in the country.
