So You Think You Can Dance? This applies to students from the University of Bedfordshire who are showcasing their talents over the next few months.
The University Dance Company (UDC) is the third year touring performance company of the BA (Hons) Dance and Professional Practice programme.
Students will be touring pieces of dance repertory to regional venues in Cambridge, Bedford and Luton this spring as part of their professional seasons.
They are going to The Junction in Cambridge on Saturday, 13 March, coming ‘home’ to the UoB Theatre itself on Sunday, 21 March, and then the hat Factory in Luton on Thursday, 29 April.
Showcase is an evening of brand new contemporary dance commissioned from an exciting mix of established and emerging choreographers.
There are four pieces of dance in total within the programme – some choreographed on them by current members of staff like course leader James Hewison and dance lecturer Annie Lok (an independent choreographer and film-maker) and some by guest professional artists like Catherine Bennett.
There is also one piece by a recent graduate, Sam Turner, who has now been invited to restage her excellent piece of final year choreography on current students.
Hewison said: “The fact that Sam’s been invited as well is recognition of her talent and potential and this represents a significant investment by the University in undergraduate employment and career development.”
The students will also be delivering a series of workshops on the repertory material to local and regional schools and colleges in the coming weeks as part of their curriculum. They are going to Sandy Upper School, Hastingsbury Upper School in Kempston, Redborne Upper School in Ampthill, Luton Sixth Form College, Wootton Upper School and Hertswood School, Borehamwood.
This will also boost their potential audience, mirroring the way small and middle-scale touring dance companies operate.
