There is a strong staff and student connection as the first ever professional season continues at the University of Bedfordshire Theatre.

The eight-week Spring Season 2010 is running throughout February and March at the Bedford campus and has an eclectic mix of current professional touring work including music, comedy, dance, poetry and theatre.

The first event to showcase the work of professional dance artists based at the University is on Saturday, 27 February. TestBed 1 brings together choreographers Sadie Hunt (Shunt Dance Company), Annie Lok and Lisa Spackman (Two Thirds Sky) in a triple bill of their new work.

This is followed by Here and There by ersatz dance on Wednesday, 3 March, which is new work choreographed by the University’s Head of Performing Arts and English Helen Bailey

Both nights are supported by the Centre for Applied Research in Dance and will feature post-show question and answer sessions with the choreographers and dancers.

You can celebrate Mother’s Day (Sunday, 14 March) by joining the University-sponsored orchestra Symphonia Academica for an evening of atmospheric classics. The centrepiece of the concert will be dance sequences performed by dancers from the University and Luton Sixth Form College to the romantic and evocative music of Kurt Weill. This is part of the University of Bedfordshire Concert Series 2009-10.

There is also local interest in the Tuesday Film Night showing of Mad, Sad and Bad on Tuesday, March 16. The film is a comedy about mixed race relationships set in Luton, starring Meera Syal, and has a strong University involvement.

BaseDance performance at the UoB Theatre

And the dance theme continues on Sunday, 21 March, with Showcase, an evening of brand new contemporary dance commissioned from an exciting mix of established and emerging choreographers.

Performed by members of the University Dance Company - BA (Hons) Dance and Professional Practice students - new work by the likes of the University’s own James Hewison and Annie Lok is being performed, as well as recent Bedfordshire graduate Sam Turner.

And part-time dance lecturer Diccon Hogger’s company BaseDance presents Space to Breathe to round off the season on Saturday, 27 March, once more supported by the Centre for Applied Research in Dance. This will also feature a short curtain-raiser performance from University students.

Ticket prices are £10 (£5 concessions, including students in full-time education) for theatre. Film nights are £5 (£3 concessions). All performances start at 7.30pm.
