Two leading professors from the Department of Computer Science and Technology are helping the University of Bedfordshire continue to forge links with China.
Professors Carsten Maple and Yong Yue recently visited Tsinghua University in Beijing which is the best university in that country for science and technology and receives the largest amount for research funding in China.
They met with the Vice President and Registrar of Tsinghua, Professor Si Yuan, and are expecting to undertake research projects and explore possibilities for further research collaborations.
Professor Maple is Head of the Department of Computer Science and Technology and Professor Yue is the Director of the Institute for Research in Applicable Computing (IRAC).
The two professors, as well as senior lecturer Dr Dayou Li, have also all been to China separately to visit Beijing Jiaotong University.
Professor Maple gave a talk to more than 200 staff and students on emerging security research threats. Professor Yue said: “The presentation described research undertaken by the information security group at IRAC, and was well received with a lively and interesting question and answer session.”
The University has a collaboration with Beijing Jiaotong in which MSc students in China come to Bedfordshire for one year to undertake an MSc by Research programme. This has resulted in publications by students and staff that were reviewed as ‘scientifically significant’.
Professor Maple has also been appointed to two high-profile positions recently. He is now an education advisor for TIGA, the trade association representing the video games industry. He is also an advisor for Computer Science for Fun (SC4FN), a magazine on computer science which is aimed at school students.
