Three members of the University of Bedfordshire Pipe Band had a Fab early Christmas present.

Pipe major Anthony Doherty, leading drummer Dave Budge and his teenage son Craig joined Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney on stage at the O2 Arena in London three days before Christmas.

The trio performed alongside another group of Highland bagpipe players on Mull of Kintyre, the 1977 Christmas number one single from McCartney’s band Wings which sold two million copies.

Anthony, a 25 year old who has been pipe major for the last two years, said: “The audience went metal; I’ve never heard anything like it in my life. When we walked on stage, it went crazy and I couldn’t hear a thing. I felt famous for about 20 minutes!”

It was the last show of Macca’s seven-date European tour and Mull of Kintyre was the second song of the second encore!

The trio were only asked a fortnight before and Anthony said: “The pipe band was offered a recording with Bee Gee Robin Gibb about 18 months ago and we did a recording for his album. The same guy who organised that asked us to help out with the Paul McCartney thing.

“Paul McCartney shook everyone’s hand and said hello. I was standing next to him and we chatted about how we would start and finish the song. He’s a legend and that kind of thing doesn’t happen often.”
