Students looking for their first teaching appointment are getting a head-start this week at the University’s Bedford campus.

Its Teaching Fair, the one and only in Bedfordshire, sees local authorities, agencies and teaching unions all recruiting for a start later in the year.

The event is taking place in the Stansfeld Gym at the Bedford campus this Friday (15 January) from 9.15am-1.30pm.

Students are able to receive professional advice and meet potential employers at the well-established Teaching Fair.

Guest speaker is Barry Hancock who will be there as part of his national lecture tour, ‘First Appointments’. His talk is designed to help students identify their own good practice in preparation for application and selection through to interview, first appointment and induction.

Luton Borough Council is just one of the local authorities which regularly attend the event to recruit trainee teachers.

The borough council’s Teacher Recruitment Manager, John Manning, said: “We explain to the teacher training students how we operate, what we can offer, and what our student recruitment process is. It’s very effective and we get about a quarter of our teachers from Bedford.”
