New Islamic Society launch at Bedford preview

Students have formed a new Islamic Society at the University’s Bedford campus – and it is being officially launched this month.

The aim of the new student society is to increase knowledge of Islam and promote student cohesion.

Its official launch is taking place on Sunday, 31 January, at the Bedford campus (2.30pm start) and was delayed due to the adverse weather conditions in the early part of this month.

Their main speaker is Islamic scholar Shaykh Zain ul Aqtab Siddiqi who is a vice-principal of Hijaz College in Nuneaton.

Another guest speaker is Rizwan Hussain, an international humanitarian worker, and Muslim Belal, an Islamic rap artist, will be performing.

Chaplain at the Bedford campus, Revd Cass Howes, said: “The students have worked really hard to get this off the ground and I am really proud of them.

“I think it’s important for us to learn about Islam and it would be a really good way for students of all backgrounds to get together and learn about each other.”

Islamic Society chair Saleha Khanom said: “A group of us decided to launch the Islamic Society to give students the option to practise their faith and study at the same time, as well as clear up misconceptions about Islam.

“We want to help increase knowledge and appreciation of faiths and beliefs between all students, as well as increase cohesion.”
