A sport journalism student at the University of Bedfordshire is gaining invaluable newsroom experience in March.
Emma Bird is covering the third annual British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Championships in Sheffield and surrounding Yorkshire venues from 10-14 March.
She is one of five selected student journalists from UK universities supporting the BUCS media team by generating copy for student and regional titles.
The BUCS championships will see 6,000 elite student athletes compete across 26 sports including football, athletics, boxing and even ultimate Frisbee!
Emma is writing pre-championship reports and then producing articles during the five days as well as follow-up reports at the end of the competition.
She said: “I’m really excited about the event but I’m also very aware that it’s going to mean a lot of hard work and commitment.
“I know it will be very worthwhile and will add to my list of invaluable work experience – something which is vital for a career in journalism.”
Emma is attending an induction day next Thursday (4 February) in Sheffield to learn more about the championships and meet the BUCS media team.
Jenni Anderson from BUCS said: “The number and standard of applicants for the student media team was incredible and we had a really difficult time narrowing it down to five names.
“As with last year, the team will be given the opportunity to write match reports and feature pieces for print and online channels, while also getting the chance to interview competitors and any elite athletes supporting the championships.”
