Five students from the University of Bedfordshire championed the worthy cause of children’s nursing recently.
Rachel Whipp, Louise McTaggart, Jackie Harlow, Amy Westwell and Hannah Prince, all child branch nursing students, went to a national conference run by the Association of British Paediatric Nurses (ABPN).
The conference, which was held at the University of Birmingham, celebrated innovations in children’s nursing and made recommendations for future research, practice and education.
Students from all cohorts competed for the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with academics, specialist practitioners and students from other universities.
The day included a workshop on spirituality in children’s nursing, which generated much debate. They were also invited to contribute to the shaping of children’s nursing by identifying the roles and qualities of the children’s nurse in the 21st century.
Rebecca Jones, Lecturer in Children’s Nursing, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to network, debate the challenges within children’s nursing and gain inspiration from innovators in nursing practice and education.”
The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and said it was ‘inspirational’ and they had gone home feeling ‘valued’ and ‘motivated to be part of the future workforce’.
