When Chris Brown a former lecturer at the University’s Business School passed away two years ago of Alzheimer’s disease, his son-in-law Andy Morris was determined to do something to support the charity that cares for sufferers.
Chris, who had been a lecturer at the Business School for more than 25 years, was 57 when he died. He had to take early retirement in 2002 because of ill health although he was not diagnosed with Alzheimer’s until just 18 months before he died.
In September, Andy will take to two wheels to cycle 300 miles from London to Paris to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society. He already has £1,200 pledged and if he can raise £1,500 or more he has corporate sponsorship which means he will double his total. The money will be divided between the Luton & Dunstable branch of the Alzheimer’s Society and national research and care programmes.

“Dementia is seen as a problem which only affects the elderly, but there are 16,000 younger people with early onset dementia in the UK. And because it’s not expected that younger people get dementia, they often don’t get a diagnosis until it is too late,” explained Andy, who is an alumni of the University, having graduated with an MSc in engineering design and management in 1997.
Andy who will undertake the cycle challenge on a distinctive Moulton small-wheeled bike – transport that will certainly make him stand out from the crowd – is keen to attract sponsorship from staff or former students that knew Chris.
