A three-month internship at the Chinese Embassy in London gave two University students the chance to acquire some valuable work skills to complement their course learning.

Isabella Qian Zhang and Erica Chong Ma were invited to help with general office duties at the consular section of the Embassy through its links with the University’s International Office.

Erica said her Embassy work placement experience has offered her a taste of life in a business environment and inspired her to pursue an MA in HR at a US university with the aim of becoming an HR professional in the future. She has received several offers from US universities and is currently making a final choice.

“Working with bright, smart, disciplined people and seeing how they do their work and how they solve problems has been very valuable,” she said.

Erica’s duties included answering general enquiries, responding to email and meeting visitors to the Embassy who had questions or wanted more information about passports and visas to Hong Kong and China, business paperwork and marriage documents.

As part of their work experience, Erica and Isabella, who graduated this year, received mentoring, and were personally thanked by the head of the consulate at the end of their internship.

Isabella who will begin studying a Masters in accountancy at a northern university in October, added: “I used to think the knowledge I have is the most important skill for a job, but I now realise that communication and team work are vital as well. The skills and ability to work well with colleagues and to finish duties on deadline will be valuable to my future career.”

The University’s International Office has now secured 16 work placements at the Chinese Embassy each year, with each student placed at the Embassy for a three-month period.
