Stonewall guide

The University of Bedfordshire has restated its commitment to create an “environment of respect and trust and a welcoming place for all people” as a new guide to ‘gay-friendly’ universities is launched.

The Stonewall University Guide sets out a ten-point checklist, including: does the university have a policy that protects lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people from bullying? Have staff been trained in these issues? And does the university adequately involve LGB students in its decision making processes?

The University, which meets six out of the ten criteria in the new guide – no university scored ten out of ten – recently launched the Sexual Orientation and Transgender Forum, which was endorsed by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon CBE. The Forum, which aims to highlight sexual orientation and transgender issues at the University, is praised in the guide as a group where “students and staff work together to make the university a diverse employer and educator”.

Dr Peter Norrington, champion of the Forum, said the University welcomed the publication of the Stonewall University Guide.

“We already meet six out of the ten key things Stonewall believes are important, which is a good start. While we recognise we have work to do, of course, our commitment to all our students' well-being is clear, if not yet visible enough.

“Universities are often thought of as open-minded. For sexual orientation and transgender issues this isn't always reflected in reality. We intend the Forum to make the student and staff experience here supportive for everyone.”
