The University of Bedfordshire has awarded a £40m contract to Campus Living Villages to design, build, operate and finance an 850- bed, ensuite student accommodation facility at its Luton campus.
The contract is also to manage the existing stock of University student accommodation in the town, which amounts to some 1,045 study bedrooms.
Work is already underway to replace the out of date buildings at Vicarage Street and at Manor Road, with contemporary new buildings and spaces.
Both developments are consistent in terms of design and sustainability with the strategic policies of Luton Borough Council’s development plan and the regeneration aspirations for the town centre.
The Manor Road development, 150 metres from the main Luton campus, will comprise three attractive buildings with two interlinked private courtyards.
The Vicarage Street development will project crisp, modern and dynamic elevations comprising a glass fronted rotunda building and three further L shaped buildings.
The 850 new beds will be delivered in two phases between August 2011 and 2012 and will include a range of ensuite room, flats and studios, as well as communal areas for socialising and study.
The project forms part of the University’s significant £140m investment in its campuses which will give students the best possible learning environment along with state-of-the-art equipment.
Deputy Vice Chancellor (Resources) Donald Harley said: “This is an exciting next step in our plans to redevelop our Luton campus and we are delighted to be working with Campus Living Villages.
“The first phase of our redevelopment – a new Campus Centre – is on schedule to open in September this year. This will bring all student services under one roof and will house a 240-seat lecture theatre, social and learning spaces and the Students’ Union.”
The University’s main advisors were Mills and Reeve, Quayle Munro and EC Harris.
Campus Living Villages is the largest international provider of on campus student accommodation owning, managing and developing around 35,000 beds in partnership with more than 50 universities across the USA, the UK, Australia and New Zealand.
Osborne Clarke acted as legal advisor and Davis Langdon as technical advisor to Campus Living Villages. Kier Marriott has been appointed as construction partner. Barclays arranged the project debt funding.
