A new Postgraduate Centre in Luton is to be at the heart of the University’s plans to promote adult learning.
The centre, which is due to be completed in summer 2012, is being designed to support postgraduate students and those already in employment who are undertaking continuing professional development, perhaps a part-time degree. It is also intended that the building will be made available to local organisations concerned with adult learning and aid links with professional groups.
The proposed five-storey building replaces the current Students’ Union building and will include a range of social and teaching spaces, and latest technology facilities.
The development on the site to the south east of St Mary’s Church is being benchmarked to achieve an ‘Excellent’ rating against the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), which is the international standard for sustainable design.
As part of the planning process, designers are already looking at the examples of a number of institutions with similar state-of-the-art postgraduate facilities.
Graham Blake, Director of Facilities & Estates said: “The building will be designed to present a mature and professional image for the University’s post-graduate students, be of high quality and open to local business.”
