The University of Bedfordshire is planning a splashing time at the Bedford River Festival this weekend.
More than a quarter of a million people are expected to flood into Bedford for this bi-annual spectacular which is running on both Saturday and Sunday (17-18 July) on The Embankment and in Russell Park.
The University is sponsoring the Sports Village and its marquee will contain giveaways and people will be able to enter a free prize draw. An Aimhigher initiative should see Year 10 students from local schools involved on Saturday.
As well as plentiful refreshment outlets including a wine tent, there will also be a fun fair, street theatre, and stunt demonstrations from 11am each day.
A carnival parade featuring floats, exotic costumes and music including a samba band starts at midday on Saturday and will boast 1,000 people from 30 community groups.
Five performance stages will have themes of music, heritage, sports, community and acoustic and there will also be live re-enactments of Viking battles.
The University is entering a team, known as the ‘Polhill Piranhas’, in the dragon boat competition on Saturday. There is an illuminated boat parade and a fireworks display on Saturday night, as well as raft races on Sunday.
Winners of the last event at Bedford in 2008, the University is keen to keep its dragon boat crown for at least another two years.
Team organiser Martin Hargreaves said: “The Bedford River Festival is great fun and team building is always important. It’s also great profile for the University, especially with our strong links with sport.”
Ten paddlers and a drummer will be involved at the Festival, with drummer Jo Richards, a research student, ensuring the appropriate rhythm is maintained.
The team is also raising funds for the non-profit organisation Inspire Malawi, which is supported by the University and the brainchild of PE graduate Michelle Rowe, during the Festival.
