An evening of song, dance and theatre was enjoyed by 200 local schoolchildren as the University of Bedfordshire celebrated one of its key partnerships.
The University is a key partner in the North East Bedford Learning Trust (NEBLT) which was formed in April 2009 around the theme of personalising learning to meet the outcomes of national project Every Child Matters.
The eight schools initially comprising the Trust are Castle Lower School, Goldington Green Lower School, Goldington Middle School, Hazeldene Lower School, Newnham Middle School, Mark Rutherford Upper School, Putnoe Lower School and The Hills Lower School. As well as the University, other Trust members are Bedford College, Bedfordshire Police, and The Bedford Charity (The Harpur Trust).

Two special performances in the Campus Centre at the University’s Bedford campus marked NEBLT’S official launch earlier this month (Thursday, 8 July).
An invited audience of friends, family and teachers watched the youngsters, ranging in age from Year One to Year 12 students, perform short pieces of dance and theatre.
Fifteen of the University’s students, either BA (Hons) Dance and Professional Practice or BA (Hons) Performing Arts ones who had all applied for the project and gained selection, had worked with teachers in four key workshops in the last month to prepare for the big day.

Lisa Spackman, the University’s Course Leader in Performing Arts, said: “The launch event aimed to celebrate the aspirations and diversity of the schools in the Trust.
“This was a brilliant opportunity for our students in performing arts and dance to make contacts with local schools and develop their CVs. They could also gain real-life teaching experience in their subject.”
The dance performances ended with a group song and the whole event was co-ordinated by a local production company called Peculiar Productions.

Paul Davies, Associate Dean in the Faculty of Education and
Sport at the University who is also chair of the Trust, said: “The event
expresses what NEBLT is about - bringing children and young people together and
to provide new opportunities for learning and encourage
future aspirations.”
Chris Jones, the Executive Co-ordinator of NEBLT, said: “This was the first opportunity for the Trust to show publicly what can happen when we work collaboratively together and we took it with both hands.
“As well as providing a memorable day for the pupils and students, the event has given the Trust a fantastic platform on which it can confidently move forward and develop over the coming years.”
