More than 300 staff and research students attended the annual University Conference held at Park Square, Luton recently.
The conference’s theme was Bridging the Gaps. Sessions focused on sharing knowledge in teaching and research practices, new innovations in learning and how staff can enhance the whole student learning experience at the University. In practice this involved a range of interactive sessions, guest speakers and more than 70 presentations over two days.

Highlights included two keynote presentations. On the first day Sophia James, Executive Committee member at the National Union of Students, discussed student expectations of universities. On the second day, Professor Bill McGuire discussed the importance of using a variety of media tools effectively to promote research findings to wider audiences.
Professor McGuire is regarded as one of the UK's leading volcanologists. He is also a one-time Luton College of Higher Education graduate, having studied at Luton in the late 1970s.
The well attended Question Time session, provided a forum for staff to quiz a panel of colleagues on various research and teaching challenges.

The closing session showcased the two-day Poster Exhibition. This consisted of more than 120 posters covering recent research work by students and staff, teaching and learning activities within and across faculties, and the Marketplace for services offered by research, teaching and support departments.
Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE said how pleased he was with this year’s conference – the biggest and best to date. He also presented prizes to students whose research posters were judged the most interesting and engaging.
The Poster Prize winners were:
Dr Peter Norrington, a lead member of the Conference organising team said “Feedback from delegates has been very positive. There was a real buzz as everyone shared experiences and built up new connections across the University.
“It’s been a pleasure to work with dedicated colleagues to put this event on, and we hope that future years will build on this year’s successes.”
