Members of the Pakistani community in Luton are building links with the University of Bedfordshire through the funding of two student places.
Community representatives have donated £4,650 to the University to fund the first place for a bright student from the Mirpur and Kotli districts in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. The money was raised by the people from that area who have settled in Luton and other parts of the UK.
The hope is that additional funds will be raised by community groups for an MBA/ MSc student to register in September 2010, with the University matching the donation to cover the cost of fees.
Luton councillor Waheed Akbar, who is one of the driving forces behind the fundraising scheme, said the support from the Luton community had been “tremendous”.
“The funds have been raised mainly by the Luton community who wish to support some needy and bright students to further their education in this country,” said Waheed.
“By increasing access to education for people from this area of Pakistan we can begin addressing some of the social problems of these communities.
“Our scholarship committee is hoping that the scheme will fund at least two postgraduate students to study at the University each year, but this depends on the support from the community and the University.”
