The Division of Science at the University of Bedfordshire has again celebrated Salters’ Day - and 40 local schoolchildren loved every second.
The Salters’ Festival of Chemistry, in partnership with the Salters’ Institute and the Royal Society of Chemistry for 11 to 13 year olds, was hosted by the University at its Luton campus on Thursday (27 May).
Ten schools took part which included six from Luton - Ashcroft High School, Cardinal Newman Catholic School, Challney High School for Boys and Community College, Challney High School for Girls, Lealands High School, and Stopsley High School and Community College.
There was also Bedford Modern School and Lincroft Middle School from Bedford, St Francis’ College from Letchworth Garden City, and Wendover House School.
Each school was represented by a team of four 11 to 13 year olds.

Organiser Dr Bushra Ahmed, Principal Lecturer in Biochemistry from the University’s Division of Science, said: “I have been organising the event for the last five years and we love to have local schools in to promote science in the region. It’s fun for us and them, and gives all of us at the University great satisfaction.”
First, second and third prizes were awarded for the two challenges which involved the schools during the day.
The Salters’ Challenge in the morning saw Bedford Modern triumph, closely followed by Challney Boys in second and Lincroft third.
And in the afternoon, Cardinal Newman won The University Challenge, with St Francis runners-up and Ashcroft High in third. Bedford Modern were highly commended for their efforts.

As well as the two challenges, Dr Peter Sutton from Lealands High School gave a Chemical Magic demonstration before the prize-giving.
David Greenfield, a biology teacher from Bedford Modern School, said: “The children were all very pleased and enjoyed the activities. And I enjoyed watching them organise themselves and work as a team.
“They are all really keen on science and have done particularly well during the year. The second task was tougher but they were still highly commended.”
The Salters’ Festivals of Chemistry are an initiative of the Salters’ Institute which aims to promote the appreciation of chemistry and related sciences among the young.
This event is one of 51 festivals taking place at universities throughout the UK and Ireland between March and June.
